Fall Activities in Minnesota

September 31, 2019

The Autumn days are here again, and Northern Minnesota’s kaleidoscope of colors never disappoints! The leaves in the Superior National Forest and Boundary Waters Canoe Area flaunt their fall palette of electric yellows, oranges, and reds. The real enchantment begins in late November when the wind picks up, and the fiery bundles of leaves dance in circles with the wind. There’s no better place to cozy up with your loved ones and watch Mother Nature work her magic than the wild beauty, Lutsen, Minnesota. There are endless fall activities in MN, but our Cascade Lodge staff members believe the best fall colors are near the Lake Superior resorts.

Leaf-peeping is one of the best fall activities in Minnesota, especially in the Superior National Forest. The great lake’s ridgelines are framed with towering maples with cranberry red leaves. You’ll also see some birch and aspens sprinkled throughout the Superior National Forest. The birches and aspens morph into hues of gold and amber, after the maples peak season. Peak color season changes from year to year based on temperature, altitude, and time of weather conditions. Typically, colors peak during the last week of September through the first week of October. Don’t wait on visiting the Superior National Forest! Who knows, this year may offer the best fall colors to date!

Gunflint Trail: Hiking_R4xwy2GiVvDHAmVV5ovvxoC060k2Zs7T1uM2OxaKIa-eRAWSeJbc5nrLOgJBdzArz7XpgaL3dWfq2h5beBTS3fAx2gaWVUf5pXTcKnTVrOoOEgBAiHle4N96S9894vDvw

The Gunflint Trail begins in a small town called Grand Marais and runs for roughly 50 miles until ending at Saganaga Lake. While hiking along Gunflint Trail, you’ll notice that it isn’t a heavily commercialized area. Swamps and lakes frame the trail, which lends Gunflint to be a wildlife haven. You never know when you’ll cross paths with a deer, moose, black bear, or wolf! The trail also has many sideroads which lead to additional hikes and access points for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA.) It is the best trail to hike for an authentic, Northwoods experience. The serene area is the ideal region to visit in hopes of catching the colorful northern lights.
