North Shore Bucket List

Plan a Visit to the North Shore Winery in Lutsen, MN

One of the most underrated aspects of a well-deserved vacation at historic Cascade Lodge is its proximity to the North Shore’s only winery in nearby Lutsen. The aptly-named North Shore Winery is a mere 10 miles southwest of Cascade River State Park, only a few ticks south of the Lutsen Mountains. In fact, this lovely winery is a common gathering place for those that pedal through the expansive Norpine Trail System, which connects Cascade Lodge to a wide variety of attractions, including several lookouts and Shore’s only winery.

The Award-Winning North Shore Winery

Unlike most backcountry wineries in Minnesota, North Shore Winery is almost wholly encircled by tall forestry and the soothing sounds of its inhabitants. The deep-woodland setting is divine, regardless of the season. On the great lawn, which has undergone several changes over the years, you’ll notice inviting Adirondack chairs, wood-burning firepits, metal art, and retired barrels. The interior is subtly modern yet incredibly down-to-earth, much like a well-kempt countryside barn. North Shore Winery hosts local musicians on its outdoor stage several nights a week, including “Date Nights” every Thursday from 7–9 p.m.

Its tasting room features local art set against a backdrop of scarlet red paint, while the facility itself boasts exposed wood—a charming touch. Popular varietals include the French Colombard, the “Boundary Waters” Red, and the “Lutsen,” a Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah house blend. Choose between four tasting flights before returning to Cascade Lodge with your favorite bottle.

Complementary Culinary Attractions

After spending a few hours at the North Shore Winery, set your sights on one of these four complementary attractions, ranging from a rooftop brewery to a backland maple syrup farm. Grand Marais’s Voyageur Brewing Company boasts perhaps the best rooftop patio on the North Shore as it directly faces the sprawling Lake Superior. Stop in for a pint (or two) and purchase some eye-catching merchandise before trekking back to Cascade Restaurant & Pub, featuring a wide selection of local ales, renowned vino, and housemade craft cocktails.

If you’re traveling as a family, the perfect companion to a short stint at the North Shore Winery is a trip along the Cook County maple syrup trail, including tours at both Wild Country Pure Maple Syrup and Caribou Cream. Each outpost, located conveniently in Lutsen, offers guided tours and an eclectic shopping experience—perfect for the whole family!
