1. Oberg Mountain
Oberg Mountain’s well-marked, 2.6-mile loop is amongst the most spellbinding experiences in the Midwest. Casual hikers are met with sprawling Lake Superior vistas, deep-wooded boardwalks, rolling (and neighboring) mountains, and, of course, picturesque Oberg Lake.
2. Wayswaugoing Bay Overlook
Nestled between the marvelous Grand Portage National Monument and the Pigeon River’s High Falls lies Wayswaugoing Bay. High above the bay is a hidden wayside rest that provides awe-inspiring views of Isle Royale National Park, jagged cliffs, miles upon miles of azure lake water, and vibrant foliage, particularly when peering toward the Canadian border.
3. Bean and Bear Lakes
It’s unlikely that Bean and Bear Lakes will surface when searching for “lookouts near me.” However, you won’t find a prettier inland mountain overlook on the North Shore. Bean Lake, in particular, is a sight to behold, mainly because it’s practically unreachable by civilization. It’s a pleasure to observe a variety of native birds soaring through the sky from these heights. This strenuous, out-and-back hike along the northern rim of Silver Bay is best trekked in fall.
4. Split Rock Lighthouse
Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, despite its grandeur and notoriety, remains an underrated lookout destination. From the lighthouse’s base, the sweeping views of wavy Lake Superior are startlingly beautiful. Oftentimes, spectators spot sluggish ships, teams of kayakers, and fierce waves. Far off in the distance, with the help of state-of-the-art binoculars, you can see the outline of the rolling hills west of the Apostle Islands.
5. Palisade Head
Palisade Head narrowly thwarted Duluth’s Enger Tower and nearby Carlton Peak to earn the final spot on this list of “lookouts near me.” While this semi-popular scenic overlook features much less fall foliage than the previous four entries, it’s an idyllic spot for a mid-day picnic or brief respite on the way to or from our classic Lutsen cabins. With Tettegouche State Park and Oynx Beach closeby, there’s certainly no shortage of potential adventure near Palisade.
