How to See Big Ships on Minnesota’s North Shore

October 2025

There’s something mesmerizing about watching a 1,000-foot freighter slip across the endless blue of Lake Superior. These Great Lakes giants transport iron ore, coal, grain, and other essential cargo, and spotting them has become a favorite pastime for visitors to Minnesota’s North Shore.

At Cascade Lodge, you’re perfectly positioned between Duluth and Grand Portage, making it easy to explore the region’s best ship-watching spots while enjoying the rustic charm and welcoming comforts of our lodge and cabins.

Where to See the Ships

Duluth Ship Canal & Aerial Lift Bridge
The Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth is perhaps the most iconic place to watch ships come and go. When a freighter passes under the raised bridge, it’s a sight you won’t soon forget.

Two Harbors
Just north of Duluth, Two Harbors is home to massive ore docks where ships are loaded with taconite. It’s an excellent place to watch the busy comings and goings of Lake Superior shipping.

Silver Bay & Taconite Harbor
Closer to Cascade Lodge, Silver Bay and Taconite Harbor provide a quieter but equally dramatic vantage point. Watching freighters glide past the rugged shoreline feels like stepping into a living postcard.

Grand Marais & Grand Portage
Further north, Grand Marais offers sweeping harbor views, while Grand Portage brings you close to the international border where freighters bound for Thunder Bay make their turn.

When and How to Watch for Ships

The shipping season on Lake Superior runs from late March through mid-January, with spring and fall being the busiest. Want to know exactly when a freighter will pass by? Check the MarineTraffic Ship Tracker for real-time ship locations across Lake Superior. Pair that with the Duluth Shipping Schedule, and you’ll be set to plan your outing around a ship sighting.
