Must-Visit Beaches Near Lutsen, MN

July 2025

When you picture a perfect day on the North Shore, chances are it includes the rhythmic crash of Lake Superior’s waves, the scent of pine and fresh air, and maybe a cozy lakeside picnic or a beach walk that ends with a bonfire. While the iconic shoreline steals the spotlight, those in the know find their way to the hidden gems, the lesser-known, serene beaches that make the Lutsen area truly special. Whether you're after solitude, scenery, or a splash with the kids, here are our top must-visit secret beaches near Lutsen, including a surprise inland retreat.

1. Cascade River State Park Beach Picnic Area

(Just steps from Cascade Lodge!)

This peaceful spot is our go-to for lakeside picnicking and skipping rocks. Tucked right where the Cascade River flows into Lake Superior, it’s the perfect place to settle in with lunch from Cascade Restaurant & Pub and listen to the harmony of the river meeting lake. Driftwood sculptures line the shoreline, adding an artistic charm, and nearby trails lead to spectacular overlooks and waterfalls.

2. Cutface Creek Wayside

(7 miles southwest of Grand Marais on Hwy 61)

A favorite of locals and in-the-know travelers, Cutface Creek Wayside offers a flat, walkable pebble beach where you can wade in the shallows or enjoy a quiet book with Superior’s endless horizon in view. A few picnic tables make it easy to linger. It’s rarely busy, which makes it feel like your own private pocket of the North Shore.

3. Grandview Park in Lutsen

Right in the heart of Lutsen, Grandview Park is a family-friendly secret that’s easy to miss unless you’re local. With a sweeping shoreline that invites exploration, a covered picnic shelter for lunch out of the sun, and even a volleyball court, this is a perfect afternoon hangout spot. The views are spectacular, especially in the golden hour light, bring a frisbee and make a day of it.

4. White Sky Rock Trail + Caribou Lake

Want a truly off-the-beaten-path beach experience? Make the short, rewarding hike up to White Sky Rock for breathtaking views, then descend to the peaceful shore of Caribou Lake, an inland gem just inland from Lutsen. The water here is calm and perfect for a refreshing dip, paddleboarding, or simply lounging on the small, secluded public access points.

5. Onion River Beach

(Near Tofte, about 10 minutes from Cascade Lodge)

Just down the road, this quiet beach at the mouth of the Onion River is where forest meets lake. Access is easy from the Ray Berglund wayside pull-off, and the scenery is breathtaking. Smooth stones, hidden coves, and the fresh sound of the river flowing into Superior make this an incredible photo op and a serene spot for reflection.

6. Temperance River State Park Shoreline

(About 20 minutes south of Cascade Lodge)

While known for its dramatic gorges and waterfalls, Temperance River also hides a rocky Lake Superior beach just off the main trail. The shoreline here feels rugged and raw, in the best way. You can hop from boulder to boulder, picnic on a flat rock, or take in a jaw-dropping sunset away from the crowds.
